Potential of Soybean Development in Oil Palm Plantation

Abstract:

National soybean production has to be increased because its production currently is only about 35-40% of total domestic demand. The opportunities to increase soybean production still widely open through increasing productivity and harvested area.
To increase harvested area, growing soybean under oil palm plantations has already been started since few years ago, mainly in sumatra and Kalimantan. In the year 2000, soybean planted area under oil palm reached 4.15 million hectares and increased up to 8.04 million hectares in 2010. Oil palm is generally grown in acidic podzolic and non-acidic dryland. In enabling to grow soybean under palm oil in acidic soils, specific production technologies for those areas should be considered, i.e. suitable variety to oil palm-canopy shading, and soil amelioration by applying lime, organic materials and NPK inorganic fertilizers. Soybean production technology in acidic podzolic dryland with integrated crop management (ICM) approach has been available, consisting of suitable variety and specific production technology. Application of this technology successfully increased soybean yield to 2 t/ha. ICM is ready to be implemented for  growing soybean under oil palm trees using shadetolerant variety such as Wilis.
